Medical information

This page is general information, not a diagnosis or personalised medical advice. A menopause consultation should consider your symptoms, medical history, medication, risk factors and preferences.

What We Treat

Menopause care is not only about hot flushes. Hormonal change can affect sleep, mood, concentration, periods, sexual health, urinary symptoms, joints and confidence. Some symptoms are caused by menopause, some are made worse by it, and some point to a different medical issue. A good consultation keeps all three possibilities in mind.

Perimenopause symptoms, including cycle changes, sleep disturbance, hot flushes, mood changes and brain fog

Menopause assessment and support after periods have stopped

Post-menopausal care, including vaginal and urinary symptoms, bone health conversations and ongoing review

HRT consultations where clinically appropriate, including benefits, risks, alternatives and monitoring

Non-hormonal options, lifestyle measures and referral pathways when another cause or specialist input needs considering

Our Approach

Care that is careful, evidence led and individual

The right menopause plan depends on your age, symptoms, medical history, risk factors and preferences. Costa Health's doctors use evidence-based guidance, including NICE guideline NG23 and professional education from the British Menopause Society (BMS). That means explaining choices plainly rather than pushing one route.

HRT can be very helpful for some women, but it is not a blanket answer. Non-hormonal options, vaginal treatments, sleep and stress support, strength training, nutrition, medication review, blood tests or referral can all be part of safe care when they fit the clinical picture.

1

Your story first

Your GP will ask about symptoms, cycle changes, sleep, mood, medical history, family history, medication and what has changed in daily life.

2

Clinical assessment

For many women aged 45 and over, NICE guideline NG23 supports diagnosis from symptoms and clinical history. Blood tests may be useful when you are younger, symptoms are unclear, or another condition needs checking.

3

Options explained clearly

Your doctor can discuss HRT, non-hormonal approaches, lifestyle support, investigations, follow-up and referral when needed. No treatment is presented as suitable for everyone.

4

A practical plan

You leave with next steps that match your symptoms, risk factors, location and preferences. If medication is considered, prescribing follows Spanish medical regulations.

When to seek urgent care

Book a routine menopause consultation for ongoing symptoms and planned care. Seek urgent medical help instead if you have postmenopausal bleeding, heavy unexplained bleeding, chest pain, sudden severe headache, fainting, new neurological symptoms, significant leg swelling, shortness of breath, severe abdominal pain, or anything that feels like an emergency. In Spain, call 112 or go to the nearest urgent care service.

Common Questions

Menopause doctor FAQs

Can I book a menopause doctor on the Costa del Sol through Costa Health?
Yes. Costa Health can help you book a consultation with an experienced GP for perimenopause and menopause concerns. Appointments may be online across Spain, with flexible in-person appointments at the doctors' licensed clinics.
What menopause symptoms can a GP help with?
A GP can assess symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleep problems, mood changes, anxiety, brain fog, cycle changes, vaginal dryness, urinary symptoms, joint aches and fatigue. They will also consider other possible causes when symptoms overlap with thyroid problems, anaemia, stress or other medical conditions.
Do I need blood tests to know if I am in menopause?
Not always. NICE guideline NG23 says that in many people aged 45 and over, perimenopause and menopause can be identified from symptoms and clinical history. Blood tests may be more useful if you are under 45, symptoms are unclear, periods have stopped early, or another condition needs checking.
Can I discuss HRT in a menopause consultation?
Yes. HRT can be discussed as part of a full medical review. Your GP will consider symptoms, personal and family medical history, preferences, risks, benefits, alternatives and monitoring. HRT is not suitable for everyone, and the decision should be individual.
Do you follow NICE and British Menopause Society guidance?
Our menopause consultations are framed around evidence-based guidance, including NICE guideline NG23 and professional education from the British Menopause Society. Your GP will also consider Spanish prescribing rules and your individual medical situation.
Can menopause consultations be done online?
Many menopause consultations can be done online, especially symptom assessment, treatment discussion, medication review and follow-up. If an examination, urgent care, blood tests or specialist review is needed, your GP will advise the safest next step.
Is this only for expats?
No. The service can help residents, seasonal visitors and tourists who want clear medical advice in English or Spanish while in Spain. You do not need Spanish private insurance to book privately.
When should I not wait for a routine menopause appointment?
Do not wait for a routine appointment if you have postmenopausal bleeding, heavy unexplained bleeding, chest pain, sudden severe headache, fainting, new neurological symptoms, significant leg swelling, shortness of breath, or symptoms that feel like an emergency. Call 112 in Spain or seek urgent medical care.
Can supplements fix menopause symptoms?
Supplements may help some people with specific deficiencies, but they are not a substitute for assessment. Some products interact with medication or are unsuitable for certain medical histories. It is safer to discuss supplements with a clinician, especially if you are considering HRT or already take regular medication.

Clinical references

This page references NICE guideline NG23, Menopause: identification and management, and the British Menopause Society NICE guideline summary. Guidance changes over time, so individual advice should always come from a clinician who has reviewed your current health.
