Your golf swing can only perform as well as your body allows. If you are losing distance, fighting inconsistency or playing through aches and pains, a structured golf performance assessment can help identify what your body needs so you can move better and play with more confidence.

At Costa Health our clinicians assess how your body moves, where it is restricted and how this relates to your swing. From there, we build a clear, practical plan to improve your mobility, stability and strength, both in the clinic and at home.

Your Body Is Your Greatest Club

Many golfers spend years fine tuning their swing. They invest in lessons, new clubs, launch monitors and extra practice, all in the hope of gaining a few extra yards, tightening dispersion and lowering scores.

Yet the same problems often keep returning:

  • Loss of distance, especially with the driver and longer irons
  • Inconsistent ball striking and contact
  • Reduced mobility and stiffness
  • Back pain during or after a round
  • Tightness through the hips and shoulders
  • The feeling that the body simply does not move as freely as it used to

Technical coaching is important, but it can only go so far if the body cannot rotate, stabilise or transfer weight effectively. In our clinical experience with golfers on the Costa del Sol, the biggest breakthroughs often come when the physical side of performance is addressed alongside swing mechanics.

The Physical Side of Golf Performance

Golf places specific demands on the body. An efficient swing requires a blend of mobility, stability, strength, balance and coordination. Each shot involves controlled rotation, weight transfer and force generation from the ground up.

When one part of this chain is restricted or weak, other areas are forced to compensate. Over time this can reduce performance and increase the risk of pain or injury.

Common physical limitations that affect the golf swing

  • Reduced hip rotation can limit power generation and make it harder to load into the trail side, often leading to early extension or loss of posture.
  • Restricted thoracic spine (mid back) mobility can affect both distance and consistency, as the upper body struggles to rotate fully and smoothly.
  • Poor core control and stability can lead to excessive movement through the lower back, contributing to fatigue or discomfort during a round.
  • Shoulder stiffness or weakness can alter swing path, clubface control and the ability to maintain width in the backswing.
  • Balance issues can affect weight transfer, tempo and strike quality.

Many golfers focus on correcting swing faults without addressing the physical limitations driving those faults. When the body moves better, technical changes are usually easier to make and more likely to last.

The Costa Health Golf Performance Assessment

At Costa Health, our chiropractors and physiotherapists have developed a structured golf assessment process based on years of working with both amateur and professional golfers across the Costa del Sol and beyond.

The assessment focuses on how your body moves in relation to your swing, not just on where you feel pain. We look for restrictions, weaknesses and compensation patterns that may be affecting performance.

What we assess

Your Golf Performance Assessment typically includes:

  • Hip mobility and rotation
  • Thoracic spine (mid back) mobility and rotation
  • Shoulder movement and stability
  • Core control and trunk stability
  • Balance and weight transfer
  • Functional movement patterns relevant to the golf swing
  • Areas of weakness, stiffness and compensation

The aim is clear: to identify what may be limiting your performance and to create a practical plan to improve it, step by step.

Quick Tip: If you consistently struggle with the same swing fault despite coaching, consider having your mobility and stability assessed. Addressing an underlying physical restriction can make technical changes feel more natural and less forced.

More Than Treatment: A Complete Strategy

Once we understand how your body moves, we can design a personalised strategy that fits your goals, schedule and current level of activity.

This may include:

  • Hands-on treatment to address joint stiffness, muscle tension or soft tissue restrictions
  • Targeted mobility exercises for the hips, thoracic spine and shoulders
  • Corrective rehabilitation to improve movement control and reduce compensation patterns
  • Strength development to support a more powerful, stable swing
  • Golf specific movement training that relates directly to your swing

Changes in the clinic are only part of the picture. The golfers who see the most consistent improvements are usually those who work on their movement regularly between sessions.

Quick Tip: Short, frequent sessions often work better than long, infrequent ones. Five to ten minutes of focused mobility work on most days can be more effective than one long session once a week.

Online Support for Golfers Worldwide

Although Costa Health is based in Mijas and Marbella we regularly support golfers who live elsewhere on the Costa del Sol and around the world. Our online assessment and coaching options allow us to guide your physical preparation wherever you are based.

Through online assessment, we identify the key areas that need attention and provide a clear roadmap for improvement. We then support your progress with structured guidance, progressions and check-ins.

Golf specific mobility programme

To support long term progress, we often recommend a structured golf specific mobility programme designed to target the physical qualities that matter most for golf performance. This includes guided routines focused on:

  • Hip mobility and rotation
  • Spinal rotation, particularly through the thoracic spine
  • Shoulder function and control
  • Balance and stability
  • Movement efficiency throughout the swing
  • Reducing injury risk and managing recurrent niggles

These simple, repeatable routines are designed to fit alongside your practice and playing schedule so you can move better, feel better and perform with more confidence on the course.

Working Alongside Your Golf Coach

We regularly collaborate with golf coaches and teaching professionals across the Costa del Sol, as well as coaches based abroad. Technical coaching and physical preparation are most effective when they work together.

A coach may identify a change in backswing length, posture, wrist set or weight shift that could improve your ball striking. Our role is to check whether your body has the mobility, strength and control needed to make that change, and to help you develop those qualities if required.

When you, your coach and your clinician are working from the same information, progress is usually smoother and more sustainable.

Is It Time To Look Beyond Your Swing?

If your game has stalled, your distance is dropping or aches and pains are affecting your enjoyment of golf, it may be helpful to look at how your body is contributing to the problem.

Common reasons golfers come to us for a Golf Performance Assessment include:

  • Gradual loss of distance despite regular practice
  • Feeling “stuck” with the same swing issues
  • Lower back, hip, shoulder or neck discomfort related to golf
  • Stiffness that makes it harder to warm up or finish a round comfortably
  • Wanting to prepare the body for more frequent play or competition

Whether you visit us in person in Riviera del Sol or work with us online, our assessment can help identify the physical limitations holding you back and outline a clear strategy to improve your movement and support your golf.

Your body is, and will remain, your greatest club.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be in pain to benefit from a Golf Performance Assessment?

No. Many golfers we see are not in pain but feel limited by stiffness, loss of distance or recurring swing issues. The assessment is designed to improve how your body supports your golf, whether or not you currently have symptoms.

Will you change my swing technique?

Our focus is on how your body moves rather than on technical coaching. We work alongside your golf coach where possible. If you do not currently have a coach, we can often adapt the physical plan to support the technical changes you are working on, but we do not replace swing instruction.

How long does it take to notice a difference?

This varies between golfers. Some notice changes in ease of movement or warm up within a few sessions, while strength and more lasting mobility gains typically build over several weeks. Consistency with your exercises between appointments usually has a bigger impact than intensity alone.

Can I still have an assessment if I have arthritis or an old injury?

In many cases, yes. Our clinicians regularly work with golfers who have arthritis, joint replacements or historic injuries. The assessment and any treatment or exercise plan are adapted to your medical history and current abilities. If something is not suitable, we will explain your options clearly and may liaise with your GP or specialist if needed.

Is the online assessment as effective as seeing you in person?

In person assessment allows hands-on testing and treatment, which can be very useful. Online assessment is still valuable for identifying many movement restrictions, planning targeted exercises and reviewing your technique. For more complex pain or medical issues, we usually recommend an in person appointment where practical.
