Can I get nursing care at home in Spain?
Yes. Costa Health arranges home nursing visits across the Costa del Sol, covering Marbella, Mijas, Fuengirola and Estepona. You don't need Spanish residency or health insurance. A licensed nurse can come to your home, hotel or holiday rental for wound care, blood tests, injections, post-surgical monitoring and more.
Every service begins with an online triage video consultation. This isn't a formality. The triage call confirms what you need, identifies any risks, and matches you with the right nurse. It's the safety gate that ensures nobody receives care that hasn't been clinically assessed first.
Costa Health doesn't employ the nurses directly. It coordinates access to independent, licensed nursing professionals who practise within regulated medical centres in Spain. All clinical decisions, from wound assessment to medication administration, are made by those professionals.
Clinical Nursing Services
Nurse-delivered care at home or in clinic
These are clinical tasks carried out by licensed nurses. Some require a prescription or existing treatment plan from a GP.
Wound care and post-surgical support
After surgery, proper wound management makes the difference between a clean recovery and a preventable infection. Nurses coordinated through Costa Health handle surgical wound dressing changes, suture and staple removal, drain care, and monitoring for signs of complications. A common scenario: you've had knee surgery in a private hospital in Marbella, you're discharged after 24 hours, and you need daily dressing changes for the next week. Rather than returning to the hospital each day, a nurse visits your home.
Wound assessment is a clinical judgement. If a nurse observes signs of infection, dehiscence, or unexpected discharge, they'll flag it immediately and coordinate with your treating doctor. They don't diagnose, but they're trained to recognise when something isn't right.
Blood tests and health screening
Getting blood drawn shouldn't mean a morning lost in a Spanish health centre queue. Costa Health coordinates home blood draws and in-clinic collections for a full range of tests: routine panels, thyroid function, HbA1c, vitamin levels, cholesterol, liver function, sexual health screening and more. Samples go to accredited Spanish laboratories with results typically back within two to three working days.
Routine health checks, including blood pressure monitoring, glucose testing and vital signs recording, can be arranged as one-off visits or as part of an ongoing care plan. For expats managing chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, regular nurse visits can fill the gap between GP appointments.
Injections, vaccinations and IV therapy
Nurses can administer prescribed injections, including intramuscular and subcutaneous medications, at home or in clinic. Vaccination services cover travel vaccinations, flu jabs and other immunisations that don't require a hospital setting. These are straightforward nursing tasks carried out under standard protocols.
IV therapy is different. Through Costa Health, intravenous treatment is only available when a doctor has prescribed or directed it. This means prescribed IV antibiotics, post-operative hydration therapy, or electrolyte replacement following a clinical assessment. A nurse will not administer an IV drip because someone wants a "vitamin boost" or hangover cure. If a doctor hasn't assessed you and determined IV treatment is necessary, it doesn't happen. This is a firm clinical position, not a commercial limitation.
Vital signs monitoring
For patients recovering at home after illness, surgery or a hospital stay, regular vital signs monitoring provides early warning of deterioration. Blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation, temperature and respiratory rate can all be checked during a home visit. This is particularly valuable for elderly patients or those with limited mobility who can't easily get to a clinic.

Non-clinical care and daily support
Not everything requires a nurse. Costa Health collaborates with nursing teams to help coordinate access to carers for practical, day-to-day support.
Hospital discharge can be daunting, especially abroad. You're sent home with a bag of medication, a set of instructions in Spanish, and the expectation that you'll manage. Costa Health coordinates English-speaking carers who can be there from day one, helping with mobility, medication reminders, meal preparation and getting to follow-up appointments.
Carer support isn't limited to post-hospital recovery. Families caring for elderly relatives on the Costa del Sol often need reliable, consistent help. Short-term cover during a family trip, daily visits to check on a parent living alone, or ongoing companionship for someone with limited mobility are all services Costa Health can arrange.
There's a common misconception that home carers are interchangeable with home nurses. They aren't. A carer provides practical support: help getting dressed, preparing meals, accompanying someone on a walk. A nurse provides clinical care: wound dressing, injections, vital signs monitoring. Costa Health keeps this distinction clear during the triage process so you get the right professional for the job.

Start by booking a short video call through Costa Health. This is the clinical safety gate for all nursing and carer services.
Triage assessment
A clinician reviews your needs, confirms the appropriate service, checks for any contraindications, and determines whether home or clinic-based care is suitable.
Care plan and nurse matching
Costa Health matches you with an appropriate nurse or carer based on your location, language preference and the type of care required. If a GP prescription or referral is needed, that's arranged at this stage.
Nursing visit or carer appointment
Your nurse or carer attends at the agreed time, whether that's a single home visit, a series of daily wound care appointments, or ongoing carer support.
Follow-up and ongoing coordination
After your visit, Costa Health follows up to confirm everything went well. For ongoing care, the schedule is adjusted as your needs change. Blood test results, clinical notes and any concerns are communicated back to your GP.
When to call 112 instead
Home nursing is not a substitute for emergency care. Call 112 (Spain's emergency number) immediately if you experience chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden severe headache, signs of stroke (facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty), uncontrolled bleeding, or loss of consciousness.
If you're unsure whether something is an emergency, call 112 first. A nursing visit takes time to arrange. In a genuine emergency, those minutes matter.
